The Right Worshipful The Provincial Grand Master Michael Robin Bailey

The Province of East Kent comprises just over eight thousand members spread over 186 Lodges, meeting in thirty five centres, located in an area bounded by Gravesend in the north of the county to the holiday resort of Dymchurch on the south coast, from Margate in the east to the historical hop growing town of Paddock Wood in the west.

The administrative offices of the Province are based at the Masonic Library and Museum at St. Peter’s Street, Canterbury.

The Centre for Research into Freemasonry

The Centre for Research into Freemasonry was established in the academic session 2000-1 as the first centre in a British university devoted to scholarly research into Freemasonry. On the occasion of the public launch of the Centre for Research into Freemasonry at the University of Sheffield in March 2001, the Centre has produced a wide range of published work, organised many seminars and conferences, and developed extensive collaborations with other scholarly projects in Europe and elsewhere.

Welcome to the "Province of London" web site.
We've called it Province of London because this web site covers most of the Masonic Orders which
operate in the metropolis [strictly speaking, each Order has its own term for its area of influence, e.g. Province, District, Division, Priory etc.]

We hope we have included the sort of information you need, whether you are already a member of some or all of the Orders covered here, or a freemason wishing to know more about a particular Order with a view to joining it, or even a non-mason just interested in knowing a little more about the scope of freemasonry in the capital city.

"The first Masonic funeral service in California in 1849 was for the body of an unknown Freemason who was found drowned in the bay. A Mark Master's silver mark was found on the body. Tattooed on his left arm were the emblems of the E.A.; on his right arm the emblems of a F.C.; on his left breast the lights of Freemasonry and over his heart a pot of incense. On other parts of his body were a beehive, sword and heart, all-seeing eye, hourglass, sun, moon, stars, comet, 3 steps, weeping virgin and Father Time with his scythe."

Freemasonry in Israel

Freemasonry is the world's oldest universal fraternity, which believes in the brotherhood of man under the Fatherhood of G-d. Freemasonry strives to achieve moral improvement, family values, civic betterment, freedom of thought, and tolerance. Freemasons around the world volunteer and contribute to medical research, hospitals, homes for the elderly, scholarships, and many other charitable causes.

Simply put, Freemasons believe that it is OK to be a good person, and that good persons should encourage each other to become better persons, and then, regardless of economic resources, work together benevolently to help in the community. Based on these strong foundations of morality and conscience, it is not surprising that Freemasonry is the world's largest philanthropic institution, seeking to provide relief for suffering humanity.

Freemasonry is a fraternity, absolutely not a secret society. As such, it is open for membership applications and has modes of recognition. Freemasonry is definitely not a religious cult or political group; Freemasons do never discuss religion or politics. Yet, membership strictly requires belief in G-d. Furthermore, Freemasons are expected to be model citizens, faithful followers of their respective religions, and loyal patriots of their respective countries.

The HFAF is a fraternity for women and organised by women. It was founded in 1913 and membership is open to women of any race or religion, who are able to profess a belief in a Supreme Being. Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest secular fraternal societies. It is concerned with moral and spiritual values. Its members are taught its precepts by a series of ceremonies. Our Order has many Lodges throughout England and the Isle of Man, stretching from as far north as Carlisle and south to Brighton and Bourn mouth and westwards in the Cotswolds. We also now have a Lodge in Gibraltar and two in Spain

The first jurisdiction in Freemasonry was the Grand Lodge of England, founded in 1717. This Grand Lodge became known as the Moderns, but was reunited with the breakaway Ancients Grand Lodge in 1813, to become the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). It is today the only regular Craft jurisdiction in England, and generally considered to be the oldest Grand Lodge jurisdiction in the world. The oldest jurisdiction in the European Continental branch, and the largest jurisdiction in France, is the Grand Orient de France (GOdF), founded in 1728.

"THE BLUE FORGET-ME-NOT" ANOTHER SIDE OF THE STORY

In a paper that was published in "The Philalethes" in February 1997, I contrasted the little-known courage of a small minority of German Masons who opposed the Nazis publicly with the until-recently-ignored cooperative attitude of the great majority of German Freemasons and Grand Lodges toward the Hitler regime in the 1930s. It was outside the scope of that paper to mention that about 1946 leading German Masons secretly agreed never to mention masonic events from the 1920-1935 period. The first public Declaration of the United Grand Lodge of Germany, issued on 22 January 1949, gave a version of the past which had little in common with factual truth.

It asserted that not one single German Mason had taken part in the Nazi crimes, which may have been true. Nevertheless, in 1949, former members of the Nazi party such as Wilhelm Lorenz (a member since 1 July 1936), Hermann Dörner (1 March 1937), Udo Sonanini (1 January 1938), Kurt Hendrikson (1 January 1941), Herbert Kessler (1 May 1941) and Karl Hoede (with the personal authorization of Hitler from 4 August 1942 since he was a Mason from 1920 to July 1933; Hoede’s son married Theodor Vogel’s daughter) already were or became soon prominent Masons under the new German republic.

The Founding of the Stanley Wykeham Lodge No. 6599

The Lodge's Sponsor is Paddock Wood Lodge No. 4291, which was consecrated in November 1921 by the late (then Col.) Lord Cornwallis whose Christian names were Fiennes Stanley Wykeham. Hence the name chosen. Paddock Wood Lodge started with twenty five Founders. In April 1924 when the then S.W. became Master Elect, he told the Lodge in replying to his toast that the time had come when they must either restrict their membership or build new premises. Up to that time the Lodge met at the Parochial Hall, Paddock Wood, and dinners were served in the Club Room of the "Kent Arms" (now "John Brunt V.C.") Hotel.

Research has been an important part of Freemasonry since the operative days of the craft. The Regius Poem or Manuscipt or Halliwell Manuscript written about A.D. 1390 is an example. There have been many Research Lodges chartered, especially during this century. There have been, however, few research societies organized throughout the long existence of Freemasonry. Only one has been able to stand the test of time.

This one is The Philalethes Society, an international association of Freemasons who seek light and those who have light to impart. It has been shedding light and truth since 1928.

The Templars were most excellent soldiers. They wear white mantles with a red cross, and when they go to war a standard of two colours called balzaus is borne before them. They go in silence. Their first attack is the most terrible. In going, they are the first. In returning, the last. They await the orders of their Master. When they think fit to make war and the trumpet has sounded, they sing in chorus the Psalm of David, "Not unto us, O Lord" kneeling on the blood and necks of the enemy, unless they have forced the troops of the enemy to retire altogether, or utterly broken them to pieces. Should any of them for any reason turn his back to the enemy, or come forth alive [from a defeat], or bear arms against the Christians, he is severely punished; the white mantle with the red cross, which is the sign of his knighthood, is taken away with ignominy, he is cast from the society of brethren, and eats his food on the floor without a napkin for the space of one year. If the dogs molest him, he does not dare to drive them away. But at the end of the year, if the Master and brethren think his penance to have been sufficient, they restore him the belt of his former knighthood. These Templars live under a strict religious rule, obeying humbly, having no private property, eating sparingly, dressing meanly, and dwelling in tents.

The Founding of Greyfriars Preceptory

Saint Francis, the founder of the Order of Greyfriars, was born at Assisi in 1182. He was a religious enthusiast, and sought in his life to carry out the injunction “Sell all that thou hast give to the poor”. Like-minded men gathered round him, and these he sent forth to preach. Thus was founded the great Order of St. Francis, known as Franciscans. In token of humility they termed themselves the Lesser Friars or Friar Minors. Hence they were called Minorites, while from the colour of their cloaks they were popularly styled Greyfriars.

'Lifelites' has been established to provide the latest IT (including multimedia services) to children in hospices in England and Wales. The project arises from the conjunction of funding from the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys ( RMTGB ) with the expertise of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists ( WCIT ).

Lifelites depends on volunteers to make it work for the children. The IT equipment at each hospice is supported by a team of volunteers.

The Stability Lodge of Instruction was founded in the year 1817, and there is strong, if not conclusive, evidence to prove that it is the only Lodge of Instruction having the right to claim to be lineally descended from the Lodge of Reconciliation, which settled the Ritual and Ceremonial of the three degrees and rehearsed the working approved by Grand Lodge in the year 1816. The Stability Lodge of Instruction was founded by some seventeen Brethren, of whom three were Members of the Lodge of Reconciliation and five others were pupils who learnt the new form of working at that Lodge.

The articles I have selected are either written about the more speculative, philosophic or ‘occult’ elements of Freemasonry, or are articles written by or about Freemasons who were also involved in other, more overtly, occult societies such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Is Freemasonry itself an occult society? As a practising occultist and Freemason it is my considered opinion that Freemasonry is not. Freemasonry, while it is "veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols", does not teach the skills necessary for operative magic and its genuinely occult symbolic framework is too sparse and disjointed to provide for any sound structure for learning or disseminating occult principles.

Greetings! From Steve Gibson Research Corporation

Without your knowledge or explicit permission, the Windows networking technology which connects your computer to the Internet may be offering some or all of your computer's data to the entire world at this very moment!

Plans and projects fill and define my life.
They consume my waking time and attention — literally seven days a week and usually 16 hours per day. There is nothing I love more than developing solutions to important problems, and having those solutions used. It's what I love, and what I do.

To the friends of Steve Gibson

My mission is to empower Internet users with ... information, knowledge, and tools to serve
and protect their individual interests.

But this is sometimes controversial and messy. If you are familiar with my work on this web site, you already know that I take stands on issues that I consider important. Through twenty years of participation in the PC industry, I have earned the respect of most of its members. Therefore, my work often receives attention and publicity . . . and often makes waves. This invites criticism from those whose interests are contrary to mine, those who are annoyed by my non-academic populist style, those who wish their work were as popular as mine, or those who are paid to creatively generate criticism. (And some people just seem to be grumpy.)

I am sincerely sorry when my actions upset or annoy anyone individually, but this appears to be an inevitable cost of taking a stand and working to create change. So be it. Disagreement, as a healthy consequence of conflict, often works to illuminate the truth. I welcome the truth, as well as your feedback and your thoughts.

Thank you for the strength of your support and enduring loyalty. I am committed to being worthy of both.

A quiet corner of a Holywood Army base has become a poignant place of pilgrimage for the bereaved families of the security force personnel killed in the Troubles and other conflicts around the world. The foundations for the one-and-half-acre site of the memorial garden in Palace Barracks were laid in 1994. The memorial stones themselves are all made from South Africa granite. The garden and the website are maintained on a voluntary basic. The custodian and webmaster are both former soldiers. This is a very special place not only for us but for all the families of the soldiers who are remembered here. In addition to looking after the garden itself we also keep in regular touch with all the families. That's very important to them and us.
"We want them to know that when we say, "We will remember them", we mean it."

Foreword from The Chief of the General Staff General Sir Mike Jackson GCB, CBE, DSO, ADC,
This magnificent volume represents a unique and profound memorial to the fallen of Northern Ireland and the Falkland’s conflicts. It is a record of acts of bravery and heroism that will remain an inspiration to generations of soldiers. The men and women contained within these pages paid the ultimate price for their service and it is with the greatest gratitude to them that I commend this publication to you. Let it serve as a lasting reminder not only of their sacrifice but also of the values and principles for which they died. They died serving their country and protecting their comrades in order that you and I should live in peace. It is entirely in keeping with those values and principles that the profits raised from this publication be donated to the Demelza House Children’s Hospice.
